About the Spirit Tales of the Vancouver Barracks Tour:

The walking tour takes place in Vancouver, Washington, at the historic Vancouver Barracks. Regularly scheduled tours run July through Halloween 2021, and by special appointment year round.  The Vancouver Barracks was founded in 1849, and members of the United States military served there until 2011.  In those years, thousands of service members, their families, civilians, and prisoners walked its grounds.  In over 150 years, they left their mark on the land and the buildings, leaving behind many memories.  Stories have grown up about the Vancouver Barracks, stories of loneliness, fear and tragedy, all part of the darker aspects of military life.  Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you will be interested in the stories of the Vancouver Barracks’ past inhabitants.

The Spirit Tales of the Vancouver Barracks tour was designed by local historian and author Jefferson Davis.  Jeff served at the Vancouver Barracks for many years.  Jeff has first-hand experience with both the spooky and ordinary history of the Vancouver Barracks.  Please join him and the other tour guides to learn more about the Vancouver Barracks’ shady past.

The tour lasts between 1 1/2 to two hours and is about 1 1/2 of a mile long. The tour starts at the west end of the Grant House Restaurant parking lot.  It follows a loop to the western half of the Vancouver Barracks, then back to the Grant House Restaurant.  Along the route, visitors will stop at locations such as the Parade Ground, and outside of several buildings like the O. O. Howard House, Post Hospital, and Ulysses S. Grant House, to learn the haunted history of the Barracks.

WARNING:  There is NO restroom at the start point, or along the route!!

Starting Location:

The tour starts in the parking lot opposite the Grant House restaurant. The approximate street address for the parking lot is 1100 East Evergreen Blvd, Vancouver, WA 98661.

The tour does not start at the Grant House, it ends there.   You will see your tour guide in the parking lot, opposite the Grant House.

You can download a copy of the tour map by clicking here. It shows the locations of several parking lots at the Vancouver Barracks.

Ease of Tour and Words of Warning:

This tour takes place, rain or shine, we do not go inside any buildings, so please dress appropriately. The tour route is about 1 ½ miles in length, over sidewalks and grassy ground, on flat ground as well as slight slopes. It also crosses several streets. Persons with disabilities, or who are a little unsteady, may encounter some difficulty. Because the tour takes place in all weather, everyone should take care when walking on grass and pavement, as well as crossing the street in low light conditions. Adults should accompany youths under the age of 13.

Please limit drinking of any alcoholic beverages before this walk. Because there is no restroom stop on this tour, you may experience some difficulties. Alcohol will also cause problems walking on difficult terrain.  We do not want anyone to trip, fall, or injure themselves in any way. The Vancouver Barracks has enough ghosts, and does not need more.

This tour is not affiliated with the National Park Service.  You cannot buy tickets for this tour at their visitor’s center.  The only way you can buy tickets is live at the tour, or through this website.  If you want to reserve a spot and pay at the tour, please email jddavis@rocketmail.com
